Army Service Numbers 1881-1918: a 2018 retrospective

As 2018 draws to a close, here's what I achieved this year.
  • Including this one, I published 48 Army Service Numbers blog posts
  • I wrote 36 Army Ancestry Research  blog posts
  • I answered over 500 British Army research enquiries
  • I wrote 23 blog posts on my British Army Ancestors website and added several hundred photos. I know of at least two success stories where members of the public have found ancestors as a result of this new initiative and I remain committed to it
  • I set up a British Army Ancestors Facebook page and publish mini biographies daily. Today's post, for instance, features Walter Holmes of the 20th Public Schools Battalion, Royal Fusiliers who is the man seated in the right in the photo at the top of this post.
In addition to the blogging and the tweeting (somewhat reduced this year, and for that matter, I am undecided whether I will stay with Twitter) and the research enquiries, I also continued with my own research projects. I have still to complete Times casualties published in March 1915 but I did complete my transcription of soldiers overseas who were enumerated in the 1911 census. I also completed the publication of my Princess Mary tin data: British soldiers who were captured on or before Christmas Day 1914.

I also ventured into the world of digital publishing. Having won two large book auctions in 2017 I now have digital, fully OCRd copies of the Rifle Brigade Chronicle and King's Royal Rifle Corps Chronicles to 1920. I have a complete run of the RB Chronicle from 1890 to 1920 but I am missing the years 1915 and 1919 for the KRRC Chronicle. I also set up separate pages on this blog offering books for sale and original photographs for sale.

So what else is in store for 2019?

I will continue with the daily posting on the British Army Ancestors Facebook page and I plan enhancements for the site. I may start posting 1911 Census transcriptions on my British Army Ancestors site, and I certainly plan more indexing of men in the army who were enumerated on returns in England, Wales and Ireland.

I will probably post fewer posts on this blog in 2019 but having celebrated 10 years of publishing on this platform this year, I look forward to the start of another decade's publishing.

To all visitors to this blog, I wish you a very happy 2019.

RAMC - Other Rank PoWs 1914

There are 365 men on this list of men from the Royal Army Medical Corps who were captured by the Germans on or before Christmas Day 1914. I have transcribed this data from the following Imperial War Museum collection:

B.O.2 1/127 is nine-page typed list sent by officer i/c RAMC records (letter to Sir Ernest Goodhart dated 13th February 1919)

My full transcription of these men (not reproduced here) also contains the home address of the majority of the men.

The full transcription is available for sale for £25. Contact me if you would like to purchase a copy.

For more information about these so-called 'Princess Mary tin PoWs' see my 1914 PoWs page. The majority of these men will also have records published by the International Committee of the Red Cross. Searching is free; finding your man is another matter entirely.

These records are catalogued at The Imperial War Museum under B.O.21/117 which is a single page handwritten list of 10 RGA ORs captured up to and including 25th December 1914.  The list was sent from RGA Record Office, Dover on 11th January 1919. Gunner Mant's record is held under B.O.21/118 and is a letter from Edward Clutterbuck to Princess Mary on behalf of Gunner Mant's mother (of 138 Shirland Road, Paddington, London) requesting the Princess Mary tin "to keep in memory of her son" who was killed in action in France in 1914.

The photograph on this page, source now unknown, shows men of the RGA photographed in 1920.

Finding Elsie's boy

It's always nice to hear a success story, better still to be instrumental in that success.

Earlier this week I had an email from the Royal Cornwall Museum who are putting together an exhibition based on a series of diaries written by a local Cornishwoman. Elsie, the woman in question refers to 'Charlie' going off to fight in the First World War, and the museum wanted to know if I could help identify Charlie. They knew his name and the fact that he enlisted in March 1915 and that later in the war he was wounded whilst serving with the 7th Battalion, Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry. Later, by now with the 1st Battalion, he was wounded again. Could I help identify Charlie?

The key to getting close to this was identifying his regimental number. Knowing he enlisted in March 1915 with a service battalion enabled me to advise the museum that his regimental number must have been between - approximately - 18600 and 19300.  The next step was to run some searches on my British Army Ancestors website which has 11.6m records and includes records in WO 372 (medal index cards) and WO 363 and WO 364 (service and pension records). The search is flexible and I advised the museum to run searches on his forename, regiment and number, using the wildcard * to obtain maximum results. The search looks like this on the site:

Here, typing Char* would identify men called Charles or Charlie (or Charlemagne) and 186* would identify all numbers beginning with 186. Cornwall* saves typing out "Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry" and would also catch mis-spellings like Duke of Cornwalls Light Infantry and other combinations.

I advised the museum to run the same search for 187*, 188* 189* etc and to makes note of all the results. Three hours later I got a message back to say that they'd discovered who Charlie was. Actually, the exact words were, "Your site is incredible, and the information you provided has led me to my Charlie after weeks of searching for him! Thank you – the rather irksome mystery is no more!"

The Charlie concerned is this man, Charles William Haslam, who served with the 1st, 7th and 2nd Battalions of the DCLI.

I'm thrilled that a combination of my regimental numbers' knowledge, and my decision to invest in a website which provides a simple search across millions of British Army records has yielded such a fast and positive result. Now to find a photo of Charlie.

Royal Marines - Other Rank PoWs 1914

The 333 men on this list were all serving with the Royal Marines when they were captured in 1914. The data comes from two sources now archived at the Imperial War Museum:

  • B.O.2 1/187 is a 117-page typed list of Royal Naval Division men taken prisoner before Christmas 1914
  • B.O.2 1/223 is a nine-page typed document sent by the Adjutant General, Royal Marines. Dated 13th January 1919.  Information noted in "Other Information" is "Present Disposal"
My full transcription of these men (not reproduced here) also contains the home address and/or next of kin address of all of the men, plus date of birth and peacetime occupation for some.

The full transcription is available for sale for £20. Contact me if you would like to purchase a copy.

3rd Dragoon Guards - Other Rank PoWs 1914

These are just four men on my 'Princess Mary Tin" list of 1914 Prisoners of War. Their names appear on the following list catalogued at the Imperial War Museum:
  • B.O.2 1/46: a list of 2nd Dragoon Guards and 3rd Dragoon Guards men captured and taken PoW prior to 25/12/1914.
My full transcription of these men (not reproduced here) also contains the home address and/or next of kin address of all of the men.

For more information about these so-called 'Princess Mary tin PoWs' (my terminology) see my 1914 PoWs page.

Royal Naval Division - Ratings PoWs 1914

These 721 men of the Royal Naval Division are mostly, if not all, part of the party which was interned in Holland when they were compelled to cross the Dutch border in October 1914. Read more about this episode and their subsequent incarceration HERE

I have transcribed this data from the following Imperial War Museum collections:
  • B.O.2 1/187: a 117-page typed list of Royal Naval Division men taken prisoner before Christmas 1914.
  • B.O.2 1/198: a typed list of Royal Naval Division men who were taken prisoner up to and including December 1914 and who have since died in captivity.
  • B.O.2 1/204: a typed list of Royal Naval Division men who were taken prisoner up to and including December 1914. These names are "taken from c/c cards not on R/O list"
  • B.O.2.1/206: a two-page typed list of Royal Naval Division men who were taken prisoner up to and including December 1914.  Submitted on 10th Feb 1919 by The Admiralty

My full transcription of these men (not reproduced here) also contains the home address and/or next of kin address of all of the men, plus date of birth and peacetime occupation for some.

The full transcription is available for sale for £30. Contact me if you would like to purchase a copy.

For more information about these so-called 'Princess Mary tin PoWs' see my 1914 PoWs page.
